{"id":1031,"date":"2019-10-07T21:33:39","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T21:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/planning.gov.bm\/?p=1031"},"modified":"2019-10-07T21:50:45","modified_gmt":"2019-10-07T21:50:45","slug":"govt-processed-emergency-permits-to-cut-slate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/planning.gov.bm\/index.php\/govt-processed-emergency-permits-to-cut-slate\/","title":{"rendered":"Govt Processed Emergency Permits To Cut Slate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government said they are aware of the plight of homeowners who have suffered roof damage as a result of <a href=\"http:\/\/bernews.com\/tag\/hurricanehumberto\/\">Hurricane Humberto<\/a>, and said\u00a0a \u201cnumber of steps have been taken to determine sites that could be used to obtain slate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Government spokesperson said, \u201cThe Government is aware of, and concerned about, the plight of homeowners who have lost roofs and suffered damages as a result of Hurricane Humberto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a result of the recent storm, a number of steps have been taken to determine sites that could be used to obtain slate. This includes<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>[1] liaising with the Construction Association to determine sites as well as<\/li>\n<li>[2] liaising with the quarry operators who have existing licenses to cut slate to ensure that there are adequate amounts that are being produced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe Ministry of the Home Affairs has processed emergency permits to enable contractors to cut slate at sites that meet the relevant requirements. Those sites that are either actively being quarried, or the landowners have requested permission, include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c1. Bermuda Slaters \u2013 near the Prison Farm, Ferry Reach, St. George\u2019s<\/li>\n<li>\u201c2. Butterfield &amp; Vallis site near BAA<\/li>\n<li>\u201c3. Barritt\u2019s Soda Company<\/li>\n<li>\u201c4. St. Regis site, St George<\/li>\n<li>\u201c5. Radnor Estate Road, Hamilton Parish<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cOn average, quarrying a single site may render 300 \u2013 500 pieces of slate daily with the current wait time for customers being between 1.5 \u2013 2 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmall repairs can require up to 500 pieces, whereas a complete roof replacement for an average size home may require anywhere from 1,500 \u2013 2,500 pieces. Property owners are reminded that in lieu of traditional Bermuda slate, synthetic slate continues to be available for purchase locally from businesses such as SAL.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore sites continue to be identified and will be provided as the Government is informed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Department of Planning encourages those about to embark on excavating a site as part of an approved development to consider quarrying if material is deemed suitable for the purposes of producing slate.
